How to Increase Revenue as an Interior Designer Without Signing a New Client
How to Increase Revenue as an Interior Designer Without Signing a New Client
A client sat across from me recently, certain her pricing was just fine. She was busy, her projects were beautiful, and her clients were happy. But when we opened her numbers together, we found something she had never noticed. Her markup was only 10%. She had been quietly carrying the cost of shipping, freight, receiving, and hours of vendor coordination, and almost none of it was built into what she charged.
So we made one adjustment. On her very next invoice, she moved from a 10% markup to a 30% markup. Same project. Same client. Same amount of work. That single change added $5,000 to her revenue for the month.
Nothing about her workload changed. What changed was the way she priced.
This is the part most designers miss. You do not always need more clients to make more money. Sometimes the fastest path to higher revenue is already sitting inside the work you are doing right now. Here is a simple process to find it.
1. Know your true markup, not your assumed one
Most designers believe they mark up far more than they actually do. When you subtract shipping, freight, warehousing, receiving fees, damages, and the hours you spend coordinating vendors, the real number is often much lower than the one in your head. Start by calculating what you are genuinely keeping on the product, not what you assume you are keeping.
2. Price for the full cost of delivery
Once you see the true cost of getting a product into your client's home, build every piece of it into your markup. The goal is not to inflate your pricing. It is to stop absorbing costs that were never yours to carry in the first place.
3. Adjust going forward, not backward
You do not need to renegotiate past projects or have an awkward conversation with a current client. Simply apply your corrected pricing to your next invoice, your next proposal, and your next project. The change is quiet, and the impact is immediate. Make sure your contracts allow for pricing to shift as needed.
4. Review your service fees, too
Markup is often the biggest leak, but it is rarely the only one. Look closely at your design fees, your procurement fees, and your hourly rates. Small, intentional adjustments across the board add up faster than you would expect.
When you price for the true cost of your work, revenue rises without another late night, another difficult client, or another single thing added to your calendar. You simply start keeping what you have been giving away all along.
The alternative is another month of working just as hard for far less than your work is truly worth.
Pricing with clarity and confidence, backed by numbers instead of guesswork, is exactly what I teach inside the Pricing Without Emotion® 8-Week Coaching Program. The next group runs this October, with four live calls where we work through your pricing together alongside other designers and business owners. If you are ready to stop absorbing costs and start charging what your work is truly worth, this is your next step.

Ready to Price With Confidence in Any Season?
So much of what feels unstable in a design business traces back to pricing that was set with emotion instead of numbers. When your prices are built on guesswork, comparison, or fear, every season feels harder than it needs to be.
That is exactly why I created the Pricing Without Emotion® Coaching Program.
Inside this program, I help interior designers set their prices with confidence, backed by numbers instead of wishes or comparison. You will learn how to analyze your current pricing structure, know whether your rates are actually right, stop offering emotional discounts, align your pricing with your revenue goals, and charge what your work is truly worth.
When your pricing is solid, every season of your business, growth or maintenance, becomes far easier to lead. If you are ready to build pricing you can stand behind in any season, learn more about the Pricing Without Emotion® Coaching Program here:
